Turning Guns to Ashes
Today, after leaving a fairly ordinary dentist appointment - that included making more appointments for unwanted follow-ups (#adulting) - I get in my car to hear that Boulder High School is in lockdown and the a shelter in place order is in effect in parts of Boulder. My husband is home today due to snow, but usually would be working in Boulder.
After hearing that announcement on NPR the first time, not 10 minutes later they added Aspen High School to the list. With in an hour, there were 10 schools in lockdown in our state. 10. TEN!!! How can I type this so it’s bigger?!
So far no one has been hurt. But what is this? What hellscape apocalypse is this? AND WHY ARE WE OKAY WITH IT? You’re welcome to unsubscribe after this next sentence but GUNS ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN PEOPLE. Period. End of discussion.
We as a country, especially those that subscribe to Christian nationalism, are showing us in their actions that owning guns is more important than living breathing children. This is not normal, healthy, or okay.
Today, on Ash Wednesday, a day that reminds us of our mortality, American terrorists are threatening the lives of our children. Our sons and daughters, our nieces and nephews, our brothers and sisters. This must stop.
And I know, I’m screaming into the void. I’m not the first to scream for this. But I am so tired of living in fear of people that refuse to honor the basic value of human life.
Let’s burn the guns and use them as ashes next year. Let’s melt them down and reclaim our humanity. Let’s stop letting terrorists threaten, harm, and kill us. It’s time to rise up and demand change. To link arms with those that have been fighting this for years, to defend ourselves against conspiracy theories, and to say no to the killing of our kids.

Gather some friends and have coffee with your representative or senator. Many are still taking meetings on Zoom. It doesn’t matter if they disagree. Schedule a meeting and tell your story. They need to hear from everyone.
Speak up whenever you can.
